Bukavu, 8 February 2013 – A training workshop for 75 court clerks, including 16 women, all hailing from Nord and Sud Kivu provinces, is taking place in Bukavu, the capital of Sud Kivu. The workshop, which started on 4 February 2013, will end 11 days later.

This meeting is an initiative of the Justice Support Section of the United Nations Organization Stabilization in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the School for Training and Retraining of Judicial Personnel – known by its French acronym EFRPJ (Ecole de Formation et de Recyclage du Personnel judiciaire).

The training aims at strengthening the service delivery capacity of the clerks so as to improve the overall functioning of the courts. Court clerks are responsible for filing and processing court cases; maintaining accurate records; acting as the custodians of any evidence introduced in court; and recording court proceedings, among other functions.

This workshop is designed to help court clerks increase their knowledge of judicial procedures, and enable the courts to operate more efficiently.
MONUSCO is providing logistical, technical and administrative support for the training.
