Update on the security situation in Goma

Goma, 29 August 2013 - The Head of Office of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the D.R. Congo (MONUSCO) in North Kivu province, Ray Torres Virgilio, and the spokesperson for the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), Colonel Olivier Hamuli, updated the local and international press on the security situation in the city of Goma.

FARDC Military spokesperson, Colonel Olivier Hamuli, said "MONUSCO and FARDC troops never shot a single shell. Our trajectory goes from North to the South. The shelling definitely came from the M23."

On the issue of a shell that went into Gisenyi, a Rwandan town bordering Goma, on Thursday morning, Ray Torres Virgilio said "according to our troops, the shelling went from the M23 positions. In any case, the populations, whether here or on the other side have the right to live in peace."

At the end of the conference, Colonel Olivier concluded by saying "the fighting is ongoing, and we are in comfortable position."
