Women’s Day in Goma 08/03/2014

MONUSCO Goma commemorated the International Women’s Day 08 March with a 2-day Art Exhibition. Organized by MONUSCO Welfare Unit in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa, the exhibition showcased, amongst others, the works of Painter Pelinda Pendeza and Metal Artist Micheline Kiankula Matondo.

MONUSCO and UN Agency staff were given the opportunity to visit the stands showcasing the beautiful work of art/Artifacts which included Paintings, Sculpture Ceramics and Metals produced by 17 artists from Kinshasa displayed in the MONUSCO Amani Cafeteria from 6 to 8 March 2014.

According to the 2 female artists who participated in the exhibition, coordinated by the Director of the Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts Sebastien Makiesse, their objective was to project the image of women in fine art which has so far been male dominated. Another argument put forward by the women artists was to show a variety of the local potentials in terms of artisanal art. The quality of the works of arts showcased is by far higher than the quality of many works of arts from other countries.

They encouraged women of all walks of life to be masters of their profession by excelling in various domains and specialty to prove their worth and contribute in the development of the society and country as a whole. The Prizes of the artifacts ranged between 50 and 700$.It is worth noting that the two female artists were trained by the Academy of Fine Arts – Kinshasa.
