MONUSCO’s mandate explained to Kisangani’s population

In Kisangani, Oriental Province, the Public Information Division of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the DR Congo (MONUSCO), between 3 and 12 December 2014, provided to the local population a series of information, awareness and exchange sessions on the mission’s mandate.

Organized in partnership with the NGO Défense Sociale Pour le Progrès et le Développement Rural (DSPDR), this awareness-raising campaign reached out to nearly 800 young people in all municipalities across Kisangani, namely Tshopo, Kabondo, Kisangani, Mangobo, Lubuya-Bera sector, Lubunga and Makiso.

The aim was to ensure the participants understand the activities of the different substantive sections of MONUSCO. These activities include, among others, building the capacities among professionals in different areas, providing logistical support, protecting civilians, restoring State authority, and consolidating peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Topics broached during these discussions and exchanges included the historical background to the peace process which started with the Lusaka Agreement which put an end to the war, and then the Sun City Agreement which enabled the country’s reunification. After this, the MONUSCO Public Information delegation explained the Mission’s mandate and presented the activities conducted and the efforts undertaken to assist the Congolese in establishing a definitive, lasting peace in the DR Congo.

Finally, on behalf of the participants, Salomon Konga, of the Lubuya-Bera sector, expressed gratitude to MONUSCO for organizing these conference-debates which, he said, “have helped clarify aspects of the Mission’s work that were poorly understood”.
