MONUSCO raises students’ awareness of the culture of peace

19 March 2015, the office of MONUSCO/Kisangani, through its Public Information Section in partnership with the NGO “Défense Sociale pour le Progrès et le Développement Rural’’ (DSPDR), held a public awareness session on the culture of peace in the school environment for the students and teachers of the two schools: Institut Mobi and Ecole Primaire Mobi in a village located 30 km in the East of the city of Kisangani.

DSPDR coordinator Passy Ndombilo highlighted the importance of promoting the culture of peace among the youth, seen as the future of the country. “You are the future of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Therefore, you must enhance your sense of responsibility to maintain the peace” he declared.

Roughly 150 participants basically comprised of students and villagers took part in the session held at EP Mobi.

“Discussions were very instructive and useful. We need a lot more such meetings and discussions” said Ms. Christine Kanayina Kibongola, teacher at Institut Mobi

The session was closed with contests during which students had to answer some specific questions and to read. 6 students won the contest and received from MONUSCO public information MONUSCO products such as the magazine ECHOS DE LA MONUSCO, umbrellas and leaflets.

The headmaster of the primary school Mobi, Gaston Kayeye Labanda expressed his gratitude to the UN Mission for organizing this session to clarify the many grey areas around MONUSCO’s mission. The products will be used not only by the students but also the teachers and other staff members to help them be more familiar with MONUSCO’s mandate,” he highlighted.
