MONUSCO Police organizes a training session for women in the North Kalemie

Kalemie, 1 July:

To participate in the fight against poverty and malnutrition in Tabacongo village, situated 17 km away from North Kalemie, MONUSCO Civilian Police organized an accelerated training session in favor of about forty women members of a development association “Association de développement et de récupération des femmes de Tabacongo”

The training session, benefitting mostly the rural farmers and illiterate women mentored by the association in Tabacongo revolved around income-generating activities. Tabacongo is a district with big agricultural production hosting the Rugumba valley; the majority of its population has no resource; which led MONUSCO civil Police to work in partnership with the female association engaged in the fight against poverty and malnutrition in this village.

MONUSCO police trainers said the training was intended to share information with the local populations on the best consumption practices “We noticed that manioc is the sole staple food consumed by the population daily while they have the possibility to transform it into a variety of food items based on its starch to make clothes, the tapioca used in the West Africa describe as highly nutritious item. We also wanted to share our experience with those women,” said one of the UNPOL trainers.

On the last day of the training the focus was on the practical activities such as cooking couscous, a food item that can be enriched and diversified. The overall objective for the training was to fight malnutrition in the village. Benjamin Kitumaini, member of the association did taste the meal

I found it better. We were taught how to cook it; it is now up to us to practice,” he indicated.

Other trainings and information sessions are due to take place in poverty and malnutrition-stricken villages.
