MONUSCO photo exhibition in Goma

Goma, 25 August 2015 – After Kinshasa and Lubumbashi, the city of Goma is hosting MONUSCO photo exhibition from 24 to 31 August. The objective of the photo exhibition is to show the Mission’s 15-year’s presence in DRC. The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General personally opened the exhibition which the Deputy-Governor of the North-Kivu province, Feller Lutahichirwa attended.

Martin Kobler said photos are a powerful medium for communication, more than many reports put together: “All the photos selected by the exhibition explain the history of the Mission through its critical moments (…); they highlight the efforts made by MONUSCO to provide not only military support, but also to back the restoration of state authority and ensure that basic services are provided to the local populations in grip of the armed groups.”

MONUSCO’s contribution to the peace in DRC was also applauded by the Deputy-Governor of the North-Kivu province who outlined the different steps and progress made since MONUC arrived in DRC in December 1999, and recalled what remains to be done to achieve a sustainable stability in the country.

The exhibition, held in an easy-of-access area, PJB basketball pitch, situated in the compound of Goma Youth House, is due to end on 31 August. Other exhibitions are due in Bukavu, Addis Ababa, and UN headquarters in New York for the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.
