UNSG for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief’s visit to Burundians’ refugee camp in Lusenda

Uvira, 3 September 2015 – Kang Kyung, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator briefly visited Burundian refugee camps in Lusenda, territory of Fizi, in the South-Kivu province on Thursday, 3 September 2015. She was accompanied by the Vice-Governor of the South-Kivu Province, the Director of OCHA office and the Chief of HCR-South Kivu Office.

The objective of the visit was to see the living conditions of the “persons who lost almost everything when fleeing their home district” and to assess the humanitarian activities. During the hour-long visit, Ms. Kyung said she was satisfied with the accommodating conditions offered to the refugees. She applauded the excellent collaboration between the Congolese authorities and the humanitarian community which helped contain the flow of Burundian refugees into the Congolese territory.

The United Nations Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief recalled the efforts made by the United Nations and the International Community to mobilize about 6 million US dollars for humanitarian assistance in spite of the economic crisis affecting the key donor countries. Ms. Kyung wrapped up with a pledge to pursue the efforts for the mobilization of resources in order to respond to the grievances from the refugees, especially those relating to children, water, sanitation, health care…
