Martin Kobler, Chief of MONUSCO, applauds the adoption of the electoral law by the Parliament in an effort to bring back social peace to the DRC

Kinshasa, 25 January 2015
– “I congratulate the Parliament on reaching a compromise on the revision of the electoral law, and the political stakeholders for demonstrating their common resolve to preserve social peace in the DRC,” declared Martin Kobler, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in the DRC.

The National Assembly and the Senate voted this Sunday, 25 January, on the revision of the electoral law.

“The wisdom shown by parliamentarians in reaching a compromise and reconciling the different positions, in line with the Constitution and especially with regard to the electoral timeframe, is remarkable and will have a beneficial effect. The constructive atmosphere thus created is conducive to the return of social peace. Building on this momentum, CENI can continue its preparations for the upcoming polls, in particular by publishing the global electoral calendar. I also applaud a better representation of women that the new law guarantees”, said Martin Kobler.
