Martin Kobler, Head of MONUSCO, condemns the deadly attack against peacekeepers in Beni territory

Kinshasa, 5 May 2015 - "I strongly condemn the ambush perpetrated against Tanzanian Peacekeepers deployed in Beni region to protect the population.”

“I want to express my sincere condolences to the families of those who died in combat. I also express my solidarity with the injured and promise to visit them on Wednesday”, said Martin Kobler, Head of MONUSCO.

The Tanzanian unit from the Force Intervention Brigade was ambushed along the Mavivi-Mayimoya axis in Kikiki village located 11 km South of Eringeti resulting in several casualties and injured among the Peacekeepers.

This is the second attack in less than 48 hours against MONUSCO Peacekeepers in the Grand Nord. Last Monday, a UN Helicopter with the Force Commander on board, was shot at, hitting the fuel tank and provoking an emergency landing.

“We definitively need to resume cooperation between FARDC and the MONUSCO military force to secure the territory of Beni”, added the Special Representative of the Secretary General.
