Kinshasa 15 March 2011 - It has been brought to the attention of the United Nations Organization Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, (MONUSCO) that some individuals have been using the name of both the United Nations Security Council and MONUSCO to fraudulently obtain money from mining companies doing business in the Congo.

Goma, 03 February 2011 - Last year 1881 rebel combatants from the militia group known as the FDLR - the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda - opted for voluntary surrender and disarmament to the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, MONUSCO. Today the FDLR combatants number approximately 2500, down 60 percent from an estimated 6000 two years ago. The rebels are located in the eastern provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu and northern Katanga.

Kisangani, 7 December 2010 – Roger Meece, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) today visited the Kapalata training center (8 km north of Kisangani, Eastern province) where about 500 newly recruited members of the Congolese National Police are being trained.

Kinshasa, 1 November 2010 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mr. Roger Meece paid a visit to North Kivu this Saturday, 30 October 2010. The Special Representative visited the locality of Rwindi situated in the territory of Rutshuru where the base of MONUSCO peacekeepers had been attacked by a group of about 50 armed men on 30 October 2010. Mr. Meece was accompanied by local Congolese authorities and a delegation of civilian and military officials from MONUSCO’s Goma office.

Kinshasa, 5 April 2010 – The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for DRC, Alan Doss expressed his deep concern about the situation prevailing in Mbandaka, Equateur province, attacked by a rebel group on 4 April last.

On Tuesday 15 December, MONUC Force Commander General Babacar Gaye was in Dongo, Equateur where he led an assessment mission comprising both military and civilian staff. On the same day, the first military elements of MONUC, led by General Abdul Austin Appogan Yella, Commander of the Western Brigade, arrived also in this locality. Temporary operational bases are now functional in Dongo and Bozene. Altogether, MONUC will deploy in the area 500 soldiers from the Ghanaian, Egyptian, Tunisian and Egyptian contingents and elements from the Guatemalan Special Force, as well as armoured vehicles, and transport and combat helicopters.

Kinshasa, 2 November 2009 - Ross Mountain, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary
General in the Democratic Republic of Congo will leave the UN mission on November 6th 2009, after
five years in this position. As well as Deputy Special Representative, he has been the Resident
Coordinator of the United Nations System and the Humanitarian Coordinator in the country, as well as
the UNDP Resident Representative.

MONUC Information Note
Kinshasa, 30 March 2009: Since the end of the joint DRC / Rwanda military operation, MONUC has continued its sensitization efforts for the combatants of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR). These efforts already made it possible for MONUC, through its Disarmament, Demobilisation, Repatriation, Resettlement and Reintegration (DDRRR) programme, to repatriate 640 war veterans and 914 dependents, from 1 January to 24 March 2009.

Kinshasa, 17 June 2013 - The Joint Technical Working Group in charge of the implementation of the Action Plan to prevent and stop the recruitment and use of children by armed groups organized an official ceremony in the Congolese capital Kinshasa on 17 June 2013, to commemorate the Day of the African Child. The event was attended by senior government officials, as well as highly ranking military representatives, members of the diplomatic corps, civil society organizations, and the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in charge of the rule of law.

Bunia, 15 June 2013 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Roger Meece, travelled to Bunia, district of Ituri, province Orientale, on 14 June 2013, to bid farewell to the UN staff and local authorities. “I am leaving the country, and it is for real this time,” the Special Representative said, alluding to other times when he left the DRC and had to return for duty.

Goma, 12 June 2013 – The newly-appointed Force Commander to the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) is currently touring the different provinces of the country to acquaint himself with the security situation on the ground, and also to meet with his troops as well as with the UN staff and the local authorities. Goma, 12 June 2013 - The last batch of the Tanzanian troops committed to the Force Intervention Brigade arrived in Goma, North Kivu province, on 5 June 2013. They will be part of the 3,069 strong force, to which Malawi and South Africa are the other two contributing countries.

Goma, 12 June 2013 - The special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Roger Meece, has announced his departure from MONUSCO. Mr. Meece made the announcement in Goma on Tuesday, 11 June 2013, during a press briefing at the airport.

Bunia, 12 June 2013 - As a prelude to the forthcoming celebration of the Day of the African Child on 16 June, ten journalists from local radio outlets in the Ituri district, Oriental province, met on Tuesday to reflect on the phenomenon of child recruitment and use by armed groups, as well as the protection of children from sexual violence. The meeting was initiated by the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the DR Congo (MONUSCO) through its Child Protection Unit, and UNICEF.

Matadi, 12 June 2013 - The Office of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) organized this Wednesday in Matadi, Bas-Congo province, a workshop on the country’s electoral process and the protection of women’s rights. The meeting was organized by the Electoral division and MONUSCO Gender Office, in partnership with the provincial office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI in the French acronym) and the NGO “Pole d’Action Genre et Election”.

Kananga, 12 June 2013 – To raise awareness on the entry into force of, and ratification process for, the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office in the Democratic Republic of Congo held, on 12 June 2013, an information session in the town of Kananga, Western Kasai province, targeting local political and civil society actors.

Bunia, 11 June 2013 – Within the framework of the implementation of the Resolution 2098 of the United Nations Security Council extending the mandate of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) until 31st March 2014 as well as the Resolution 1325 on women as actors of peace and security, MONUSCO’s Gender Office jointly organized with local authorities in Mahagi territory, a workshop to help reinforce the capacities of women’s associations, community leaders and religious communities in this territory.
