Kinshasa -14 August 2016. The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in DRC and Head of MONUSCO, Maman Sambo Sidikou, offers his condolences to the Congolese people in general and to the population of Beni in particular, following the attack on the civilian population during the night of 13 to 14 August 2016, in the village of Rwangoma in the Beni area, allegedly committed by the ADF.

Reports indicate that 31 victims have been brought to Beni town, while 5 victims were reportedly buried at the scene of the attack. “MONUSCO strongly condemns such an act of barbarism committed against the civilian population and reiterates its support to the Congolese Armed Forces known as FARDC, as well as to the Congolese National Police Force known as PNC, for the protection of civilian populations in Beni”, said Maman Sidikou.

MONUSCO, in cooperation with the FARDC and PNC, deployed forces throughout the territory of Beni to contribute to the protection of the population and prevent further attacks. Joint patrolling is underway and a senior MONUSCO delegation will fly to Beni on 15 August to express their support to the national authorities in addressing the situation.
