North-Kivu Brigade receive training on maintenance and restoration of law and order

Goma, 31 July 2013 - 33 Indian peacekeepers of North-Kivu Brigade have been undergoing 10-day training on the maintenance and restoration of law and order since Monday 29 July. The training has received technical support from MONUSCO Police in Goma.

As part of the North-Kivu Brigades' capacity-building, MONUSCO Police/GOMA has, for the first time, organized in the North-Kivu province two trainings on the maintenance and restoration of order (MROP in the French acronym). The purpose of the training is to get MONUSCO troops familiarized with the conventional techniques of the maintenance of law and order and to help them cope with the urban violence in strict compliance with Human Rights as well as the public and individual liberties.

After their training, the North-Kivu Brigade's peacekeepers will join force with the Formed Police Units who are increasingly confronted with breaches of peace and public order. The training is especially focused on the practical aspect since troops are not destined to manage such situations. The 33 elements of the North-Kivu Brigade have 10 days to learn by heart the MORP rules of engagement and police tactics as well as to familiarize with police equipment. The modules are designed to familiarize them with crowd management techniques.

The first training will be concluded on 9 August while the second is to start on 5 August at Sake, 27 km away from west Goma and to end on 16 August.

It is worth recalling that in February 2012, MONUSCO training unit launched a series of trainings on the maintenance and restoration of law and order for the peacekeepers deployed in the DRC's sectors.
