Martin Kobler Head of MONUSCO deplores the death of two demonstrators in Goma


Goma, 24 August 2013
– The head of MONUSCO deplores the death of two civilians who were killed in demonstrations in Goma on Saturday (24 August 2013) and has called for a joint inquiry by the DRC Police (PNC) and MONUSCO's Police Cell, UNPOL.

In the mean time fighting continues between FARDC and the M23 rebels. MONUSCO forces continue to support the efforts of FARDC with all the means at its disposal.

During the fighting mortar shells fired from M23 positions landed in MONUSCO positions in Munigi village, injuring three Peacekeepers.

The head of MONUSCO, Martin Kobler condemned in the strongest terms the attack, emphasizing "No act of this nature by the M23 will be tolerated and any attack on the Civil Population and the United Nations constitutes a war crime.
