MONUSCO and UN Women honor Congolese women who, every day, build the societal, economic and political spheres of the country

Kinshasa, 8 March 2014 MONUSCO and UN Women in the DRC join their voices to encourage each and every one to support Congolese women who, while being victims of atrocities as women and mothers, continue fighting to support their family, community and country. The MONUSCO and UN Women in the DRC reiterate their joint engagement with Congolese women in the fight for their dignity, social promotion and the materialization of their rights.

Françoise Ngendahayo, UN Women Representative in the DRC, reminded that this engagement is fully in line with the national theme for the Women’s International Day: “Together against the war and the violence perpetrated on women and girls, by consolidating peace and justice for the development of the DRC”

“What we celebrate today is not just a sole special day dedicated to women but the social, economic, political and cultural importance of all women each day of the year, “ added the UN Special Representative of the Secretary General in the DRC, Martin Kobler, echoing the slogan for the Day: “Equality for women is progress for all.”

Françoise Ngendahayo and Martin Kobler reiterated the support of their respective organizations to the commitments made by the Democratic Republic of Congo, especially in its Constitution which upholds the principle of equality between men and women, as well as the recommendations from the National Dialogue for an increased participation of women in the political space.
