Beni : la MONUSCO installe des lampadaires pour renforcer la sécurité

In Nzuma, a remote neighborhood of Beni in North Kivu, nightfall once meant fear. With no electricity or public lighting, residents were vulnerable to attacks by armed groups operating under cover of darkness.

Since 20 June, the road linking Nzuma’s health center to National Route 4 is lit, thanks to solar-powered streetlights installed by MONUSCO—a project welcomed by the local population.

Claudine Kyakimwa, a mother of several children, expressed her relief: “I feel good, at ease. Thanks to MONUSCO for this initiative. There have been cases of sexual violence against women on this avenue, as well as other incidents.”.

Going out at night, to reach the health center or fetch water, was particularly dangerous due to past ADF rebel attacks. The new lighting has helped restore a sense of normalcy after dark.

At the official handover, Rémy Masashi, Mayor of Rwenzori commune, representing the Mayor of Beni, commended:"This is a laudable gesture in favor of the population of this neighborhood and those living in the vicinity of the Nzuma health center.".

A total of 45 streetlights were installed under this USD 49,233 Quick Impact Project, implemented by MONUSCO’s Force Intervention Brigade (FIB). A concrete step toward improving daily life and public safety.
