DRC: MONUSCO concerned over the death of Armand Tungulu Mudiandambu

Kinshasa, 8 October 2010 - MONUSCO expresses its deepest concern over the death of Armand Tungulu Mudiandambu, who died in military detention at a camp in Kinshasa the midnight of 1 and 2 October.

Armand Tungulu Mudiandambu was arrested on 29 September 2010 for pelting stones at the motorcade of President Joseph Kabila allegedly.

MONUSCO solemnly reminds the Congolese authorities of their obligations under national and international laws relating to deprivation of freedom. These include: the right of every detained person to be under the control of a judicial authority; the right to contact his family or lawyer immediately; and the right to physical integrity and preservation of dignity irrespective of the seriousness of allegations against him.

Since Armand Tungulu Mudiandambu died in detention, MONUSCO calls for an impartial and transparent investigation to determine the causes of death.
