MONUSCO urges congolese political leaders to restrain from incitement to violence

Kinshasa, 08 November 2011: The United Nations Organisation Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) is deeply concerned by the rising spate of pre-electoral violence in many parts of the country and incitement to violence by political leaders that has marred the presidential and legislative elections campaigns since 28 October.

MONUSCO expresses its concern regarding the language employed by political leaders inciting electoral related violence. This constitutes direct violations of Congolese electoral law and international electoral standards.
MONUSCO wishes to stress that it is only through a free, fair and democratically held elections that Congolese can choose their political leaders.
