MONUSCO Police quells down violence during soccer game in Kisangani

Bunia, 10 June 2012 – A game between two soccer teams of Province Orientale turned violent on 6 June. MONUSCO police promptly intervened to avert the worst.

The soccer game between Association sportive Nika (AS Nika) from Kisangani and Cercle sportif Eldorado (CS Eldorado) from Bunia that took place at Amani stadium turned violent when supporters of CS Eldorado violently attacked AS Nika's players to vent their discontent following their team's defeat by two goals to nil.

The violence that ensued was stopped thanks to a rapid and robust intervention by MONUSCO Bangladeshi Police elements. They, then, used armored vehicles to escort the players to their hotel.

The prompt intervention of the UN Police was lauded by the population as well as the political and administrative authorities in Bunia. The two teams were playing the finals in a qualifying match for the national cup.
