MONUSCO assists CENI in deploying electoral kits for upcoming elections

Kisangani, Tuesday, 24 June 2014 - The United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) assisted the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) in airlifting 15 tonnes of electoral kits to Kisangani on Tuesday 24 June 2014, in anticipation for the upcoming elections.

The kits will be used to stabilize the operational mapping and to ensure reliability for the voters' register. Immediately after arriving, they were carried to CENI’s warehouses in Kisangani, Isiro and Bunia to be dispatched to the different territories of Kisangani province and beyond. The stabilization operations will consist, inter alia, in ensuring that data on cartography effectively match those on the ground.

MONUSCO has transported the kits as part of its mandate from the UN Security Council Resolution 2147 to facilitate DRC’s upcoming electoral process in line with the mandate. Aside from the logistic support provided through its electoral unit, MONUSCO assists CENI in developing kits deployment plans. Transport operations for Eastern province alone will cost MONUSCO $ 282 814.
