Strengthening the capacity of twenty human rights activists

In Goma, some twenty human rights activists have completed training in techniques for collecting judicial data relating to sexual violence.

They attended a three-day training workshop held from 15 to 17 December 2014 by the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO), in partnership with the Congolese government.

This training was designed for civil society organizations that are partners of the UNJHRO in the context of the program to fight sexual violence; and also for representatives of the Gender Unit of MONUSCO, police officers, Provincial Ministry of Justice delegates, Gender Divisions representatives as well as their civilian and military court counterparts that are partners of the UNJHRO/MONUSCO.

The training aimed to strengthen the capacity of local partners in techniques for producing qualitative and quantitative data to enrich the database provided for in this area.

It was also undertaken in the context of the program for increasing the reliability of data on law enforcement and the fight against impunity for sexual violence and gender-based violence. The said data are those stored in the database managed by the Gender Unit.

For Mme Charlotte Songué, Coordinator for the National Sexual Violence Program at the UNJHRO in the DRC, « It was important to organize first this theoretical and practical training for partners of the UNJHRO/MONUSCO, before providing each of these partners with a kit consisting of a laptop computer, a modem allowing them internet connection, communication cards and office supplies to enable them to be more effective on the ground.”

The training workshop was officially opened and closed by Christophe Ndibeshe, Provincial Minister of Justice, in North Kivu.
