Bunia, 7 May 2011 – The Head of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), Mr. Roger Meece, travelled to Bunia, the administrative capital of the district of Ituri, Province Orientale, on 5 May 2011, to see first-hand the situation on the ground.
Upon arrival, Mr. Meece held several meetings with various representatives of the United Nations system. He also met with the local political and administrative authorities later in the day.
Mr. Meece, then, travelled to Mahagi, a locality in Ituri 186 km north-east of Bunia, to inquire about the current security situation following violent protests in the area last April.
Mr. Meece expressed satisfaction for the progress made in the achievement of MONUSCO's mandate in the district, and commended the UN staff and their local partners for a good collaboration.
Prior to departing Bunia, MONUSCO's Chief encouraged his colleagues to continue their efforts in the implementation of the Mission's mandate, especially during this election year. He further urged them to give full support to the Independent Electoral Commission (CENI), the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) and the National Police Force (PNC) in terms of providing security for the civilian population.
