During the night of May 4 to 5, 2026, MONUSCO peacekeepers intervened following a new escalation of security tensions reported in Djugu Territory, in Ituri. According to information gathered by the Mission and the Congolese army, elements of the armed group CRP had reportedly gathered in the locality of Bassa, located about 30 kilometers from the MONUSCO base in Gina, raising fears of a possible attack on the FARDC headquarters in Pimbo.
Located in the Walendu Djatsi chiefdom, the locality of Pimbo was already experiencing a particularly tense situation due to the presence of CODECO elements in the surrounding area, increasing fears among residents who were concerned about a possible escalation of violence.
In response to this threat, local authorities requested MONUSCO’s support to evacuate internally displaced persons who had taken refuge at the residence of the Walendu Djatsi sector chief. On the morning of May 5, patrols deployed from the Gina and Fataki bases intervened to secure the area and evacuate the twenty-four displaced persons, including fifteen children.
After receiving medical assistance, the civilians were safely transported to Iga Barrière, where they were placed under the care of the head of the Mayalibo grouping.
MONUSCO also maintained day and night patrols around Pimbo to prevent any deterioration of the security situation.
According to the Force, this rapid intervention by the Nepalese peacekeepers helped protect civilians, reduce the risk of further violence, and strengthen the confidence of local communities in the joint efforts carried out with the Congolese army and local authorities.
