The military governor of Ituri, Johnny Luboya Nkashama, praised MONUSCO’s contribution on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, describing it as a key partner in civilian protection and in efforts to stabilize the province.
While receiving MONUSCO chief James Christopher Swan, who is on his first visit to Ituri, he expressed appreciation for the “excellent collaboration” between provincial authorities and the UN mission.
“We will continue to work together to protect civilians, because one does not refuse the help of a friend or a partner.” the governor said.
During discussions with the MONUSCO chief, General Luboya notably praised “Aru II” the agreement signed by armed groups in Ituri last June to end armed violence. The UN mission supported Congolese authorities in organizing the consultations that led to the signing of this agreement.
Although acknowledging that further efforts are still needed, the governor stated that the agreement has helped reduce the threat posed by militias in the province.
He also denounced disinformation campaigns targeting MONUSCO.
“How can one oppose partners and friends who have come to help us protect the population? The negative sentiments being spread are often the result of manipulation. […] Until then, we can still come together with MONUSCO in Mambasa [editor’s note: a territory in Ituri where, two weeks ago, some youths prevented a convoy of peacekeepers from entering the area]. The objective is to protect civilians,” he said.
James Swan arrived in Bunia on Tuesday, April 21, from Beni and is expected to continue his visit on Thursday.
