In Drodro, Djugu territory in Ituri province, football has become a powerful tool for peacebuilding. On Saturday, a friendly women’s match brought together two teams from the Hema and Lendu communities, thanks to an initiative led by MONUSCO through its Community Liaison Assistants (CLAs) and Bangladeshi peacekeepers.

Beyond sport, the match aimed to strengthen social cohesion and promote peaceful coexistence between two communities long affected by armed conflict.

A “match for peace” attended by over 400 people

More than 400 spectators gathered to witness what was dubbed a “match of friendship and peace.” Attendees included local authorities, such as the representative of the Walendu Tatsi sector chief, community leaders, youth representatives, the parish priest of Drodro Catholic Church, and members of local defense and security forces.

The atmosphere was warm and encouraging, reflecting a shared commitment to reconciliation.

A widely praised initiative

Participants praised MONUSCO’s efforts, highlighting its important role in fostering peace and unity.

Shaba Shatso Betuel, representative of the Walendu Tatsi sector chief, emphasized the significance of the event:

This match between the two communities marks the beginning of peace. Our wish is to see this process continue until full peace is restored in our region.

He also suggested organizing a return match on Lendu territory to sustain momentum.

Jean-Baptiste Njangu Tukpa, chief of the Buku grouping and representative of Bahema Nord, also expressed optimism:

Thanks to MONUSCO’s efforts, Hema and Lendu communities are gradually reconnecting — sharing markets and places of worship again. Today, football brings them together once more, something unimaginable in the past.”

A symbolic draw reflecting fragile peace

On the field, the match ended in a 0-0 draw — a scoreless game, yet deeply symbolic of balance and mutual respect.

One of the most striking moments came at the final whistle, when Hema and Lendu players embraced each other — a powerful image of reconciliation.

As a token of encouragement, MONUSCO peacekeepers donated jerseys and footballs to both teams, symbolizing “trophies of peace.”

A simple but impactful initiative, reminding all that dialogue and coexistence remain the true victories to be achieved in a region where peace is still fragile.
