As in previous months, July underscored the complexity of the UN Mission in the DRC’s operations. The month began with James Swan’s diplomatic talks with the Prime Minister and awareness-raising sessions on SSR at UNIKIN. On the ground, youth empowerment was fostered through training programs in Ituri, while the aerial rescue of Jordanian peacekeepers in Walikale underscored the mission’s humanitarian commitment. The month concluded with the celebration of International African Women’s Day (IAWD) through the unveiling of the Wall of Impactful African Women, supported by MONUSCO, which capped off this period.

Community Action for the Integral Development of a New Congo (ACDI/N), a partner of the National Youth Council of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (CNJ-RDC), organized an awareness-raising session on Security Sector Reform (SSR) at the University of Kinshasa, with technical support from the Security Sector Reform (SSR) Section of MONUSCO’s Rule of Law and Security Institutions Division (ROLSID). Titled “Understanding, Embracing, and Promoting Security Sector Reforms for Participatory Security Governance,” this initiative provided students and young people with a comprehensive and holistic view of security, facilitated by experts from the National Security Council (CNS) and the Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) focal points.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of MONUSCO, James Swan, met in Kinshasa with Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka to discuss security, diplomatic, and humanitarian priorities in the DRC. Their discussions focused in particular on the implementation of the Mission’s mandate, support for regional peace processes, the protection of civilians, and the Mission’s logistical support in response to the Ebola outbreak in Ituri, thereby reaffirming the close cooperation between the Congolese government and the United Nations to stabilize the country.
