Ituri: Four hostages abducted by CRP rescued through joint FARDC–MONUSCO intervention

Among the former hostages are an officer of the Congolese National Police (PNC), a young activist from civil society movements, as well as a woman accompanied by her child.

Four people abducted by armed elements of the Convention for the Popular Revolution (CRP) have regained their freedom after more than two months in captivity, following operations conducted by the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC), with the support of MONUSCO, in Djugu territory, Ituri Province.

According to available information, the victims had been held since 27 January 2026 and were moved across several areas of activity of the armed group, notably in Bule, Liri and surrounding areas. Their presence was eventually reported on 10 April 2026 in the area of Ala, located approximately 13 kilometres north-east of the MONUSCO base in Fataki.

Among the survivors are a police officer from the Congolese National Police (PNC), a young community leader, as well as a woman and her child. The child had sustained a gunshot wound during clashes in early March in the area, before being taken to an armed group camp.

Following the alert, MONUSCO’s Nepalese contingent deployed a rescue patrol from its base in Fataki, leading to the recovery of the victims in Ala. The survivors were then evacuated to the base, where they received comprehensive medical care.

On 12 April 2026, they were officially handed over to the community in the presence of local administrative and security authorities, marking an important step in their gradual return to civilian life. The survivors also spoke about the difficult conditions of their captivity.

A call for vigilance and strengthened security

CRP fighters intercepted us while we were returning from Tchomia. They took us to their camps, where we were held in very difficult conditions and subjected to mistreatment. Today, we feel safe at the MONUSCO base. But we fear for our lives if we have to leave. We are asking for support for ourselves and for our families, who remain exposed to danger.
Survivor testimony

Speaking during the official handover, Justin Gudza, Chief of the Walendu Djatsi sector, welcomed the return of the victims while calling on the population to remain vigilant:

“We welcome the return of our fellow citizens. However, we urge the population to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with the authorities to prevent such acts.”

Djugu territory continues to face the persistent presence of armed groups, including the CRP, responsible for attacks against civilians, forced displacement and abductions. In this still fragile security environment, MONUSCO remains mobilized and on alert. In support of the FARDC, it is strengthening its presence in high-risk areas, intensifying patrols and continuing its civilian protection efforts in close coordination with Congolese authorities and local communities, with the aim of sustainably improving security for the population.
