The Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General ad interim, Mr. Ely Dieng, met on Wednesday with the National Coordinator of the Disarmament, Demobilization, Community Recovery and Stabilization Program (P-DDRCS), Mr. Jean de Dieu Désiré Ntanga Ntita, in Kinshasa.
During the meeting, they discussed strengthening coordination between the P-DDRCS and MONUSCO, which supports the Congolese Government in its efforts to promote stabilization and consolidate peace.
The P-DDRCS is an initiative of the Congolese authorities aimed at supporting the reintegration of former combatants into society by providing them with economic and social opportunities. Its objectives include contributing to conflict resolution, fostering social cohesion, restoring State authority, and improving security.
The two officials also reviewed the respective mandates of their institutions, ongoing activities, and prospects for enhanced cooperation to improve the coherence, complementarity, and effectiveness of interventions in conflict-affected provinces.
Particular attention was given to strengthening the linkages between Disarmament, Demobilization, Reintegration, Community Recovery, Stabilization, and Security Sector Reform (SSR).
Mr. Ely Dieng, who has also served as Head of MONUSCO's Rule of Law and Security Institutions Division (ROLSID) since July 2024, oversees the Justice Section, the Corrections Advisory Unit, and the Security Sector Reform Section.
Issues related to the disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of former combatants are an integral part of the UN Mission's mandate. For this reason, MONUSCO works closely with the Congolese programme, particularly on technical and operational matters.
MONUSCO and the P-DDRCS reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining regular dialogue in order to strengthen complementarity between national mechanisms and United Nations support for disarmament efforts.
