Bangladeshi Peacekeepers and Military Observers Receive UN Medals in Bunia

Bunia, 27 April 2012
– The commander of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) General Chander Prakash presided over a medal award ceremony during which medals were awarded to the Bangladeshi peacekeepers serving in the air force contingent and to the UN military observers based in Ituri. The ceremony took place on Saturday 27 April 2012 in Bunia.

Altogether, 365 peacekeepers from different components received medals of merit for the noble services rendered within the framework of the implementation of the Monusco mandate whose top priority consists in the protection of civilian population. To make the ceremony more exciting and colourful, guests were treated to special military performances.

Monusco/Ituri chief, Mr. Ladjouzi M'Hand took the opportunity to appeal to the militia members of the Forces de Résistance Patriotique d'Ituri (FRPI) still active in the Irumu territory to lay down their weapons in anticipation for a possible redeployment of the elements of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) to their former positions currently occupied by the militia members.

Mr. Ladjouzi further appealed to the population to dissociate themselves from militia groups and highlighted that Monusco was there to protect civilians pursuant to its mandate.
