Guatemalan Special Forces Conduct Operation ‘Dragon Fire’ in Ituri

Bunia, 17 August, 2011 – Nicknamed 'Dragon Fire', an operation conducted by the Guatemalan Special Forces under the aegis of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) between 8 and 16 August, was intended to quell insecurity in northern Province Orientale, one of the largest provinces in the country, which borders the Central African Republic, the Republic of South Sudan, and Uganda.

The all-encompassing operation, was conducted in the localities of Duru, Bitima, Bayote, Anduala, and Ngilima, all within a 25-km radius North and North-West of Dungu, in the Haut-Uélé District. This area had been experiencing significant increase in banditry activities in recent months. The main purpose of the operation was to protect the civilian population, instill confidence and demonstrate MONUSCO's presence even in the most remote areas.

The operation comprised three phases, in which the Guatemalan Special Forces (GUASFOR) established Temporary Operational Bases (TOB) in key towns. The TOBs carried out extensive joint patrols, thus enhancing the security and creating a deterrent effect to the various armed groups that were destabilizing the region.
