MONUSCO organizes training for Fizi prison staff members

Fizi, 9 December 2015 – As part of MONUSCO-organized capacity-building program for prisons staff members, the United Nations Stabilization Mission in DRC, MONUSCO-Uvira, through its Correction Unit, organized three refresher sessions for the Fizi prison staff in the South Kivu province, from 2 to 4 December 2015. The prison has 55 inmates. In attendance, the prison governor as well as the prison administrative and security staff members. The refresher session focused on the accommodation procedures, searching of the detainees and management of prison’s register.

MONUSCO correction unit advisers reminded the learners the process used to facilitate the registration of the new detainees. With respect of the searching of the detainees, a focus was laid on respect for the inmates’ dignity as well as physical and moral integrity.

The prison governor, Kahongo Djumaine, thanked MONUSCO for organizing the training and took the opportunity to request further training.

At the end of the training, copies of the decree 344 – providing guidance on the organization of the correction units in DRC were handed out to the Fizi prison governor; each participant received a copy of the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, kind of “Bible” for the good practices on the prisons management.

In the margin of this activity, MONUSCO handed out to Prison staff items like shirts, pens, reams of paper, note books, envelopes…
