Goma, 3 July 2012 – Several experts of the Stabilization Support Unit of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) held meetings with the teams of the Stabilization and Reconstruction Plan for Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (STAREC).

These teams came from the different provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo for a number of trainings to advance the implementation of the Plan.

In the last week of June 2012, the participants, from the provinces of Sud-Kivu, Maniema, Katanga, Equateur and Province Orientale, met in order to discuss the strategies for a prompt implementation of the Plan.

STAREC was primarily designed for armed conflict-affected areas, especially in eastern DRC. It was launched by the Congolese Government, with the support of the United Nations system and development technical partners. Its main goal is to restore State authority in the East which is the region that is the most fragile and most exposed to conflicts. The plan works towards the rehabilitation of administrative infrastructure, and is also involved in the fight against poverty and impunity regarding the numerous exactions and violations committed in this part of the country. The Plan is also working towards inter-communal reconciliation and good governance.
