Martin Kobler, Head of MONUSCO, deplores loss of lives in a shipwreck on Lake Kivu.

MONUSCO mobilized in support of the victims.

Kinshasa, 05 May 2014 – “It is with a very heavy heart that I learned today’s shipwreck on Lake Kivu. My thoughts are with the families of the victims and those still missing, we all share their sorrow,” declared Martin Kobler, the Head of MONUSCO.

Promptly after discovering the capsizing boat from an Unmanned Aerial
Vehicle (drone), MONUSCO Forces engaged their assets to save the
passengers.

Following the engagement of three boats and two helicopters of the MONUSCO,
14 passengers were rescued alive from the waters of the lake. One was
already dead and at least 10 people are still missing.

The rescued passengers were taken to a MONUSCO medical facility.
