Bunia, 15 September 2011 – The mood was festive in Bunia, capital of Ituri district, in the northeastern Province Orientale, on 14 September, as the Bangladeshi Formed Police Unit (FPU) based in this region received the United Nations Medal from the UN Police Chief, Abdallah Wafy. The 138 members of the Unit were awarded the peace medal after completing a two-year service in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Police Commissioner of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), Abdallah Wafy, who presided over the ceremony, paid tribute to the work of the three Units deployed in the Mission since September 2009. He praised them for the discipline and professionalism they demonstrated throughout their stay.

Their service ends on 6 October 2011 and they will be replaced by another contingent that will assume the same duties.
Commissioner Wafy took advantage of his visit to meet with the local National Police authorities in Bunia, and to discuss security matters in light of the upcoming elections, which are expected to kick off on 28 November with presidential and legislative contentions.
