MONUSCO builds a prison cell for Kalemie national police

Kalemie, 20 January 2011 – The Police Unit of the UN Stabilization Mission in the DR Congo (MONUSCO) based in Kalémie completed the construction of a detention cell, and handed it over to the local National Police Inspection at a ceremony organized for the occasion on 20 January. The detention cell was built through a 29,000-dollar Quick Impact Project.

The Project, which started on 30 August last year, was implemented by engineers from the Benin Contingent. The work received a lot of attention not only from the UNPOL in Kalemie, but also from the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Roger Meece, who visited the site two months earlier on 20 November, to ensure progress was made.

The prison comprises four cells of 12 m2 each, half of which are for under-aged detainees and the other half for adult prisoners. The building also has a 15 m2 corridor, and an 8 m2 bathroom area with three toilets.

The inauguration was chaired by the Tanganyika District Deputy-Commissioner in charge of political and administrative affairs, Mr. Joseph Kasonde. The ceremony was also attended by local administrative authorities and several military and civilian representatives from MONUSCO.
