MONUSCO calls for constructive dialogue to promote peaceful elections

Kinshasa, 06 September 2011: The United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) is following closely the progress so far achieved in the electoral process, especially with regard to the submission of presidential and legislative candidate applications at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) candidacy reception and processing offices.

However, MONUSCO deplores the wave of violent incidents recorded over the last few days, not only in Kinshasa but across the country. The Mission firmly condemns these incidents and calls on all parties involved in the electoral process to show restraint and to do every effort to avoid any act that could jeopardize the smooth operation of the elections.
MONUSCO also invites all concerned parties to resolutely engage in a constructive and peaceful dialogue, and finally calls on the relevant authorities to take all the steps necessary to guarantee freedom of expression and ensure the protection of the people and their properties.
