MONUSCO campaigns against HIV/AIDS in Kasai Oriental

Mbuji-Mayi, 14 February 2012 – The Office of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) organized on 8 February 2012 a day to sensitize the students of the Advanced Institute of Medical Techniques of Mbuji-Mayi (Institut supérieur des Techniques médicales -- ISTM) on HIV-AIDS contamination. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Programme national multisectoriel de Lutte contre le SIDA (PNMLS), a national institution in the fight against AIDS, were co-organizers of the event.

The activity follows the campaign launched during World AIDS day on 1 December 2011, with the theme, "Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS-related deaths".

Hundreds of people, including a majority of students, members of the academic staff, and all the local actors involved in combating HIV/AIDS in the Kasaï Oriental province took part in this activity.

The different presentations focused on the pathways of contamination, means of prevention and stigma. This theoretical part was acted out in skits on stigma and sexual violence in the academic environment by a local theatre group called "Samy de Banglof". Thousands of condoms were distributed to close the day.
