MONUSCO Introduces New Methodology into Civil Conflicts Management in Sud-Kivu Province

Bukavu, 14 March 2012 – New collaborative methods on conflicts management were recently developed by the Office of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) and the governor of Sud-Kivu. The new approach consists of classifying conflicts based on whether they are related to land issues, customary power, or the struggle for natural resources.

Through its Civil Affairs Section, MONUSCO recently reviewed, with provincial authorities, the major civil conflicts in the region. MONUSCO then presented its new methodology on conflicts management.

Besides helping to develop a mapping for civil conflicts, the new methodology will serve as a guide to conflicts settlement efforts, taking into account the significance and urgency of each conflict.

Thanks to the assistance of Sud-Kivu provincial authorities, MONUSCO Civil Affairs section is currently updating the civil conflicts mapping jointly with the local inspectors.

The outcome of the meeting will not only determine the future course of the activities of MONUSCO and its partners in the protection of civilians, but will also play a decisive role in restoring state authority.
