MONUSCO pays a glowing tribute to former CENI President Abbé Malumalu

Kinshasa, 2nd July 2016 - Following the demise of Reverend Father Apollinaire Malumalu in the night of Thursday 30th June 2016 in Dallas, USA, MONUSCO pays a glowing tribute to the man credited with organizing the first democratic elections in 2006.

This immense accomplishment will forever remain engraved in the annals of the DRC’s political history.

I wish to convey my most profound condolences to his family, his diocese of Butembo-Beni as well as to the entire Congolese population who have lost a man that dedicated his entire life to the cause of his country”, said Maman Sambo Sidikou, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the DRC.

MONUSCO wishes to applaud his commitment and dedication to the service of the Congolese nation.

Reverend Priest Malumalu was an icon of experience, courage and conviction and who, beyond his role in the organization of the 2006 elections, played a pioneering role in the stabilization of conflict-affected areas, particularly through the launch of the STAREC (stabilization and reconstruction plan for the eastern DRC), the Kivu peace processes, including the Goma Accords, and more recently, in the outcome of the Kampala Talks between the ex-M23 and the Congolese Government.

I hope that the Congolese people will draw inspiration from his dedication to the cause of peace and that his example will be emulated by the entire Congolese political class to enable us reenact the feats of past elections through the organization of free, transparent and credible elections, as stipulated in UNSC resolution 2277”, concluded Maman Sambo Sidikou.
