North Kivu: MONUSCO peacekeepers build markets in Loufou and Kirumba

Goma, 19 December 2010
- MONUSCO peacekeepers of the Indian battalion (INDBATT) in North Kivu recently constructed two markets in the villages of Loufou and Kirumba. These villages are at 195 and 200 km respectively north of Goma.

The construction of Loufu market was achieved through local resources. The materials were provided by INDBATT while the market sheds in Kiroumba were built through MONUSCO's Quick impact project (QIP) at a cost of $US 9, 500. It is hoped that the construction of the new markets will reinforce the goodwill between local population and MONUSCO.

The population in these two villages is predominantly Nandé with agriculture being their mainstay. They also engage in timber and charcoal trading.

After rebels burnt down the market in Loufou in April 2009, the population requested MONUSCO to assist them construct new sheds. Understanding the difficult conditions under which the villagers are living, INDBATT decided to undertake, with the support of local workers, the construction of a 100 feet- market with 6 sheds in both villages.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony recently, North Kivu brigade Commander, General Mohanty, said: "The construction of a market shed will be a step toward prosperity for the population."

The Indian Battalion also recently constructed wheel chairs in Goma and other neighboring towns to assist 45 children with physical disability.
