Peacekeepers’ Day in Kisangani

Kisangani, 30 May 2011
-Peacekeepers' Day was celebrated on 30 May in Kisangani. Among the main actitivities were a wreath laying ceremony, a military parade, speeches, free medical consultations, and sport activities.

The Day started with the hoisting of the UN flag, a one-minute silence and wreath-laying in memory of peacekeepers who died in service during the course of the year, and then a military parade performed by UN troops deployed in the area along with their Congolese counterparts. Peacekeepers took this opportunity to provide free medical consultations to members of the local population. The day ended with a volleyball game opposing peacekeepers to a selection of Congolese soldiers.
