UN Peacekeepers launch a program called “Catch them young”

Goma, 20 March 2012 – In Nord Kivu, Indian peacekeepers of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) set up a weekly course program for youngsters in villages located within their area of responsibility, thereby enabling young Congolese of the region to acquire professional skills and basic civic education.

The program, coined "Catch them young", is an initiative of Nord Kivu Brigade through its 33 operational bases established around the province. Under this program, more than 100 youngsters of different age are taking English lessons, painting, as well as classes in auto repair, and dance. Sport competitions are also organized for children aged between 8 and 16. The peacekeepers are also teaching them with civic and moral education, and ethics.

Many young men and women are enrolling in these classes to the satisfaction of their families. The villagers have expressed their appreciation to MONOSCO for this initiative through which, these children are building self-esteem and community cohesion, which it is hoped, will contribute to paving the way for peace and development in the country.
