MONUSCO’s Sud-Kivu Brigade Launches Operation “Akikisha Usalama”

Bukavu, 18 May 2011 - A new operation code named "Akikisha Usalama," or "Peace by any Means" was launched on 12 May 2011 by the Sud-Kivu Brigade of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO).

The operation which is aimed at protecting the civilian population, was informed by the absence of the National Armed Forces (FARDC) in areas where they departed following their current restructuring and training.

As part of this operation, the UN Force deployed eight new mobile units -- in addition to existing ones --, that could swiftly intervene in their area of operation at any time.
Furthermore there are intense patrols being conducted in specific areas that are prone to attacks by various armed groups.

These new security measures are to reinforce the FARDC, based on the security threat level due or not to the presence of armed groups.

Since the start of this operation, civilians who fled their homes in fear of attacks have been returning to their villages.
