MONUSCO provides human rights training to media professionals

Kalemie, 18 March 2016 - Organized by the office of MONUSCO-Kalemie from 16 to 18 March 2016, the training for journalist trainers on human rights concepts,   collection, analysis and reporting of information was held in St Joseph conference room, in anticipation of the coming elections.

 The training was attended by journalists from six territories of Tanganyika province. About thirty public and community radio, newspaper and television journalists including six women, as well as members of the military and police information services participated in this workshop.

The participant journalists had the opportunity to learn about MONUSCO’s mandate, journalism ethics, human rights in general, human rights-sensitive reporting, and the electoral process.  In addition to these topics, trainers from the Human Rights section covered the protection mechanisms for journalists, threats facing journalists, and problems relating to the protection of journalists.  

These presentations were followed by a productive exchange and sharing of experiences among   participants, led by Radio Okapi journalists.  The workshop also established a panel discussion on the exercise of the profession of journalist in the face of the State authorities, especially in this electoral period. 

A delegate from the Special Commissioner (Head of the province) and a representative of Tanganyika province’s military command were present. They responded to concerns raised by journalists wishing to see good relations established between the provincial authority and the media.
