MONUSCO Reinforces the Capacity of Jurists and Paralegals in Ituri District

Bunia, 31 March 2011 – The United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), organized a capacity-building workshop for jurists and paralegals of the district of Ituri between 29 and 31 March.

The three-day training workshop attracted 25 participants from local civil society organizations. The workshop focused on the role of jurists and paralegals in the dissemination of the 20 July Law of the Congolese Penal Code regarding the protection of victims of sexual violence modified in 2006.

The participants said they were satisfied with the training and thanked MONUSCO and the UNDP for organizing such a workshop. As their contribution, they made recommendations on ways to achieve a greater impact of their work in the field.

MONUSCO's rule of law section also participated in the workshop and during their intervention briefed the participants on the Mission's mandate vis-à-vis its support to the Congolese Government in the reinforcement of the rule of law in the country.
