MONUSCO Sensitizes Congolese Civil Society on Upcoming Elections in DRC

Bunia, 12 May 2011 – The UN Joint Human Rights Office (BCNUDH), and the Public Information and Electoral Divisions organized a training workshop around the theme"Human Rights and Elections" to raise awareness among members of Human Rights NGOs, as well as human rights activists and journalists in the district of Ituri, North-Kivu province, on the upcoming elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The capacity-building training, which took place between 10 and 11 May 2011, attracted over 40 participants.

Specific topics debated during the two-day workshop included the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Elections, the Congolese's constitution, Human Rights and Elections, the Role of the Media in Elections, and Monitoring Public Protest in Elections.

A similar workshop is scheduled in the near future for leaders of political parties and elements of the police force in ituri.
