Peacekeepers Promote Culture of Peace through Sports in Ituri

Bunia, 28 March 2011
– The Bangladeshi contingent in the district of Ituri, Province Orientale, organized a football tournament in Bogoro, a locality about 25 km south of Bunia, near Lake Albert, along the border with Uganda. The tournament, which started on 19 December 2010 culminated with a final match on 28 March 2011. Several local teams from three neighborhoods of the district; Walendu Bindi, Walendu Tatsi and Bahema Sud, took part in the tournament.

The objectives of this sporting event were twofold: to promote peaceful coexistence among the population and strengthen the ties between the people and Peacekeepers.

A total of 16 teams took part in the three-month tournament. The final match opposed Djembe Sport of Bogoro and La Foudre noire of Tagba. Djembe Sport won by one goal to nil.

The commanding officer of the Ituri Brigade, General Abul Kalam Azad, lauded the fairplay demonstrated by the people and recalled the Peacekeepers' role of protecting civilians and consolidating peace in the country.

The prize giving ceremony that wrapped up the event saw every team and organizers go home with an award.
