Roger Meece inaugurates a new birth center and a rehabilitated road stretch in Ituri

Bunia, 20 October 2012 – On 19 October 2012, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Democratic Republic of Congo, Roger Meece, inaugurated a newly built birth center for the population of Dele, a locality situated seven kilometers south of Bunia, the capital of the Ituri district, Province Oriental. The district authorities attended the inauguration ceremony.

The birth center was constructed at a total cost of 20,000 US dollars, with funding from the Quick-Impact Projects programme of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO). The construction work was executed by the Nepalese contingent of MONUSCO Force.
With this birth facility, which includes a consultation room, a delivery room, and a hospitalization room, several thousands of local women will have access to appropriate health-care services that will enable them to go safely through pregnancy and childbirth. The new birth center will also be equipped by MONUSCO.

On the same day, Mr. Meece inaugurated the newly rehabilitated, 52 km long road stretch between the localities of Djina and Fataki. Carried out by the same Nepalese contingent, the rehabilitation of this road will facilitate the movement of people and goods between the different communities in the region, thus helping to strengthen ties and to consolidate peace.
