Sud Kivu, 17 October 2011 - The United Nations Police in the Sud Kivu province jointly with the Congolese National Police Force (PNC) is currently training 700 police officers of the Mobile Intervention Group (GMI) in the Lake Tanganyika district and Bukavu for a better policing of the electoral process.

The first wave of trainees comprising 250 GMI police officers including 10 women started their training in the policing of the electoral process on Monday 17 October 2011. For three weeks police officers will be receiving training on the maintenance and restoration of law and public order as well as on technical and professional interventions.

The second wave of training, intended for 450 GMI police officers in Bukavu, started today Thursday 20 October 2011.

At the end of their theoretical training, the 700 police officers will go through some practical training in the techniques of crowd and public protest management.

We should recall that in August 2011 more than a hundred police officers in the Sud-Kivu province including guard battalion and district police officers received the training.
