UN applauds the implementation of the revision of the voters’ register for the benefit of the Congolese people

Gbadolite, 31st July 2016 – On the occasion of the launch of the pilot operation on the revision of the voters’ register in the North Ubangi province, the United Nations recalls their support to the Congolese Government for a smooth implementation of the electoral process under the UNSC Resolution 2277. It consists in, on the one hand, providing technical and logistic assistance to the revision of the voters’ register, and on the other hand, promoting transparent and all-inclusive dialogue through the good offices of the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in support of the African Union’s facilitation effort through its Support Group, to pave the way for peaceful, credible, transparent and all-inclusive elections.

“The United Nations encourage the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI in the French acronym), to move ahead and implement transparent and credible revision of the voters’ register. This is key to the consolidation of democracy and to holding all-inclusive elections for the benefit of the Congolese people,” said Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-general in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) during the roll-out ceremony of the pilot operation held in Gbadolite, North-Ubangui province on Sunday 31st July 2016.

Dr. Mamadou Diallo further said: “The revision of the voters’ register is a democratic principle the UN uphold and as a result of which, we promised our support to the Government and the CENI. We are deploying the kits to enable all the Congolese women and men to register on the voters’ list which will help them to make their voice heard during the upcoming elections.”
The United Nations through its Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo is flying the equipment for the revision of the voters’ list from Kinshasa to 15 centers and 107 stations difficult of access, a bit less than half of the total number of stations, in response to a CENI’s request made in December 2015.

As part of the North-Ubangui pilot project, on 31st July 2016, the United Nations has made available to the CENI a store house at N'djili airport, an aircraft that can fly up to 20-tonne equipment from Kinshasa to Gbadolite.
